Chapter 28

MAE

I saw Jai and Teo marching behind Axil to where Cole had dragged me to a stop. I trembled with cold but also with fear. I hated not knowing what was coming. Growing up, I made it my point to always be prepared, which meant thinking of all possibilities. I was really letting that slip while I was his captive.

The twins knelt before me while a knife appeared out of nowhere in Axil’s hand. My eyes widened in shock before they roamed over his shirtless torso, noting that his tattoos looked as though they were alive. It seemed as if the ink was moving over his chest, wrapping itself around his back and shoulders. Kiaen walked up behind me without me being aware and grabbed my hand, holding it out to Axil’s knife. I tried to pull away, pleading with my eyes, but Axil refused to look at me.

Kiaen leaned into my ear and whispered.

“Stay still. If you want them to live, you’ll not move or speak a word.”

The knife sliced through my hand, causing tears to fall from my face. He was going to bleed me out slowly in front of his people. I just hoped that I’d die before he killed the twins. I saw the knife now hovering over Teo’s heart. At least it would be quick. I tried to tell them how sorry I was for making them keep the attack on me between us, but nothing came out of my swollen throat.

Axil sliced over Teo’s heart, and I turned away, not wanting to see another person dead before me. I waited, holding my breath but never heard the sound of a body hitting the ground. I slowly opened my eyes and saw that across Teo’s heart now was a large cross. Jai stretched his arms willingly, ready to accept the same punishment.

Axil’s words filled the air.

“Teo and Jai Braern of the Fae Kingdom have relinquished their position in my court. They have now been raised to the Queen’s Guard. May the goddess's strength give them power and loyalty to protect the Queen.”

Cole was pulling me forward, guiding my hand that Axil had sliced open. I watched my blood drip into a goblet before it was presented to the twins. Words were spoken, but in that ancient language that the brothers seemed to use a lot around me. The twins accepted the goblet and drank my blood from it. My eyes were bugging out as I heard Cole speak behind me, making me jump from the crazy town I was now part of.

“You have your own personal guards now. They’ll die for you and kill for you, even one of their own.”

Axil turned, now facing the army standing before him.

“Who here assaulted the Queen? Step forward now, or you all die.”

My eyes blinked rapidly and my stomach clenched. Did he just say queen? Who was the queen? What the hell was going on? I looked over the men, not expecting anyone to step forward in
